Is it OK to use AI in a job interview?
Use AI during an interview only when the employer, interviewer and assessment instructions permit it. If the policy is unclear, ask before the session. Preparation and live assistance are different uses.
Check the instructions for this interview
Read the invitation, candidate handbook and any instructions shown by the assessment platform. Check whether notes, internet searches, coding assistants, transcription or live answer suggestions are allowed. Permission for one tool or stage does not automatically apply to the next.
A proctored assessment may allow selected resources or prohibit them. A conversational video interview may also have restrictions. Do not infer permission from the presence or absence of monitoring.
How to ask clearly
For this round, may I use my own preparation notes or an AI tool? I would like to confirm whether transcription, code completion or answer suggestions are permitted, and whether I should disclose any use in my submission.
Describe the actual feature you intend to use. A vague reference to a helper may not communicate that it listens to audio or generates answers. Keep any written clarification with the interview instructions. If you cannot get clarification, complete the assessment without live assistance.
Preparation you can practise honestly
- Rehearse an introduction using your own experience.
- Ask practice questions about a project and explain your decisions aloud.
- Review an answer for structure, then check every factual claim.
- Run a mock call with a consenting friend using non-confidential material.
- Practise answering again without reading a generated draft.
Respect confidentiality even during practice. Do not upload an employer's private assessment questions, customer data or somebody else's resume without permission.
When live assistance is permitted
Stay within the scope agreed by the interviewer. If only reference notes are allowed, do not assume live answer generation is also allowed. If a take-home assignment permits AI, follow the requested attribution or disclosure format. You remain responsible for the accuracy of the work you submit and for being able to explain it.
What an assistant cannot establish
A fluent answer is not proof that it is correct or based on your experience. Screen-capture behavior says nothing about permission. A product's marketing statement cannot override interview instructions. Different employers and assessment stages may use different rules.

If instructions change during the session
Stop using a tool when asked, clarify the new requirement and continue within it. Do not attempt to work around restrictions. Questions about consequences or employment terms should go to the employer or an appropriate adviser; this guide is practical preparation guidance.
