TCS interview questions for freshers: NQT practice guide

Prepare to explain your projects, solve basic coding problems and answer HR questions. Start with the hiring category in your TCS invitation, then use these practice prompts to find the answers you need to improve.

Ninja, Digital and Prime: check your invitation

Use the category named in your invitation to choose the level of practice. For a coding-focused role, spend more time explaining algorithms and trade-offs. Pay differs by category and offer conditions; read the current posting and your own offer instead of treating a salary range from another drive as a promise.

Technical questions to practise

Use these prompts to check your understanding. Add harder coding practice when the role calls for it; the list does not predict your interview.

• “Walk me through your final-year project.” A useful practice prompt. Ask yourself follow-ups: why this database, what breaks if two users submit together, what did you personally build? If you can't answer the third one, the project counts against you, not for you.
• “Which language are you comfortable in?”, then fundamentals in that language, so pick honestly. Java: OOP pillars with real examples, == vs .equals(), collections. Python: lists vs tuples, dictionaries, what a decorator is. C: pointers, memory.
• SQL practice. Write a query with a JOIN; difference between WHERE and HAVING; what a primary key vs foreign key is. Services companies live on databases; a fresher who is smooth in SQL stands out immediately.
• One definition ladder. What is an operating system → what is a deadlock → how do you prevent it. Or: what is HTTP → difference between GET and POST. They are checking whether your degree left residue, not whether you can lecture.
• For Digital/Prime: a live coding prompt: string reversal without built-ins, second-largest element, a simple recursion, where they watch how you think aloud more than whether the syntax is perfect.

The managerial (MR) questions

The MR voice on the panel is estimating one thing: can this person be put in front of a client team without supervision?

• “Team conflict mein kya karoge?”: give one real incident, small is fine: “Group project mein ek member deadlines miss kar raha tha. Maine pehle directly baat ki, problem unke laptop ki thi, college lab se kaam karva ke humne submission time pe kiya.” Structure: noticed → talked directly → solved. No villains.
• “Are you okay working on a technology you didn't choose?” This is the real shape of a services career, so the honest yes wins: “Yes, at this stage I care more about learning to build production systems than about which stack. Preference toh hai, condition nahi.”
• Pressure checks: “What if you're put on support work?”, “What if your rating is average in year one?” Calm, specific, no speech.

HR answers to practise for TCS

• Why this role? Choose one specific responsibility from the current posting and connect it to something you have done or want to learn.
• When can you join, and can you relocate? Give your actual availability and constraints. Correct any old information in your application.
• What are the offer terms? Read the current pay, training, location and any agreement before accepting. Ask questions if anything is unclear.

What actually rejects people at TCS

• Answers that contradict the NextStep form: relocation, backlog count, gap dates. HR has the form open while you speak. Re-read your entries the night before.
• A project you can't defend. One borrowed project explained badly outweighs three modest ones you actually built.
• Accepting a package or agreement without reading it. Ask for clarification when you need it.
• Panic silence. A wrong answer recovered calmly scores better than a freeze. If you need a moment: “Give me ten seconds to structure this”, then answer. The habit of pausing is trainable: how to stop blanking out.

And one thing that does not reject people: imperfect English. TCS panels are bilingual in practice. If the interviewer drifts into Hindi, answer in natural Hinglish and keep the technical terms in English, here is how to do that without sounding casual.
